Literature and Art

Marc Chagall (1964)

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

This famous play by William Shakespeare, published in 1597,  has inspired lots of painters throughout history. Here are some works of art portraying the lovers, Romeo and Juliet.

Teo Marchante, 1Bac-A:

Hello, everyone!

1. What do you like best of the story?

I like the story in general, mainly because it deals with universal feelings, such as love or hate. It shows us the power and strength of love, the importance of fate and the meaninglessness of hate. I like the fact that it´s a tragedy and I also like Juliet´s character, because, even if she´s too young and naïve, she´s able to rebel and she shows a great deal of courage.

2. What would you change of the story?

I like the story, so I wouldn´t change anything. For me, it makes sense just the way it is.

3. Do you think the ending could be another one? Which one?

Yes, it could be a happy one, if only there wasn´t a family feud or even if Friar Lawrence´s letter had arrived in time. But in order to have a different ending, we should change the whole play, because we know from the beginning that Romeo and Juliet are two star-crossed lovers, so it´s the inevitable fate that leads them to such a tragic ending. From my point of view, a happy ending would ruin the play.

Plenty of songs have been written and interpreted by classic as well as modern musicians

"Senlleiras", recibimos a Antía Yañez.
